Build relationships that help you thrive

“If you want to go fast, go alone; but if you want to go far, go together.”

African Proverb

Having people who want you to do well is important. The writer of Ecclesiastes said “Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed” (4:9). But then he went further: “Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken” (4:12). How many are ideal?

Jimmy Dodds recommended that SIX people were vital to maintain passion and energy in pursuit of a calling. (“Survive or Thrive: Six relationships every pastor needs” David C Cook 2015)

Individuals can take action to do more than just survive. Across the many sources of advice are key themes: living with purpose, pursuing your passions, using your skills, gifts and strengths, and caring for your physical needs. But going it alone is a recipe for a short journey. Adding supportive people who can challenge, question, encourage and inspire will enable you to go far. Build relationships. They will help you thrive. Who do you need in your life to help you ‘go far’?

The SIX roles Dodds identified are vital for continued success are: Boss, Trainer, Coach, Mentor, Counsellor, Good Friend. Take time to think about the people in your life. Who will help you survive, reach your goals and thrive in ministry? Invest in building relationships with people who fill those roles in your life.
